Who kills more children than anyone? What will we do now? Shall we follow Diane Feinstein and banassault rifles so that the only people who have assault rifles are NRA members with enough foresight to have pre-purchased them? Shall we give the guns to soldiers and the paramilitary police then beg them not to shoot at us in the street the way they do "suspects" at protests and in ghettos now? What do we offer instead, more psychological care, more assessments, more surveillance? When the POLICE STATE arrives, will it be forced on us, or will we have been duped into demanding it? "Give me liberty or give me death." But don't hurt the children (of this country), anything but that! It's our Achilles heel. And we surrender unequivocally if you threaten them.

This week’s show is about story and narrative withJonathan Gottschall, author of The Storytelling Animal. Although this is not about Obama or politics, Barry reveals the overwhelming importance of story in our lives:
In a July 2012 interview with Charlie Rose, Obama said that “the mistake” of the early years of his presidency was his failure to be a better storyteller:
“The mistake of my first couple of years was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that’s important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times.” If given a second term he says he will “spend more time with the American people, listening to them, but also being in a conversation with them about where do we go as a country?”
The late evolutionary biologist Steven Jay Gould called humans “the primate who tells stories…” And it’s not just Gould. Anthropologists have found societies that have existed for millennia without the wheel, but they’ve never found one that doesn’t tell stories.

The past three terms saw the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act. Now there is little public discourse about ongoing infringements on the rights we once took for granted.
The Obama administration has largely continued and, in some arenas, expanded on Bush-era intrusions into American lives via warrantless wiretapping and other secret initiatives of the National Security Agency (NSA) and through “fusion centers” scattered throughout the country.
The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations recently issued a scathing report on fusion centers saying that, while the Department of Homeland Security has spent billions of dollars on them, the centers have actually produced “useless, irrelevant, or inappropriate intelligence reporting.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano called these fusion centers “one of the centerpieces” of her department’s counter-terrorism efforts.
Constitutional and privacy advocates have added their concerns to those of the Senate Panel, asserting that fusion centers violate everyone’s privacy.
Many city governments also think so: The Berkeley City Council recently voted to limit their local police department’s collaboration with a fusion center. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been accused of violating civil liberties by the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition for feeding reports into a local fusion center. More

Yoga (to yoke) means union. There are different ways (to yoke, to union). It opposes alienation, the view of separateness of "self" from all (sakkaya-drishti). Experiencing the ONENESS of all things is not enlightenment. But it is blissful, a relief, giving a sense of connection longed for (connectedness) at a profound and innate level. How? Allow it.
We may be finding it difficult to meditate. That's common and to be expected for untrained hearts. Stress not. Relax more deeply. Wish for it less. But keep applying the "method" -- bring mind back to the object of meditation. What does that mean? It only means remember to give attention to what the mind is being centered on -- the present moment, this breath, a mantra, a sensation, a visualization, a fragrance. If one is engaged in the fundamental practice of not concentrating on the breath but simply allowing attention to go back to the breath again and again until it sits there. There is no effort to make other than persisting, waiting for a natural elevated state to come as a result of everything falling away, letting go, restoring consciousness to pure awareness without a goal.

The Non-Duality Model essentially says that the goal is to stop a process of identification that turns some patterns of sensations into a Doer, Perceiver, Center Point, Soul, Agent, or Self in some very fundamental perceptual way. Dr. Angana P. Chatterji is an anthropologist, activist, and feminist historian from Calcutta, India. She is a co-convener of the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Dr. Chatterji's research is closely related to her activism and focuses mainly on India. An anthropologist by profession, she has studied "militarized governance, gender and identity, and self-determination" in Indian-administered Kashmir and communal violence in Orissa.
In the context of the United States, she has researched issues related to "hyper-nationalism, diaspora, and identity politics" in American society.
She was formerly (1997-2011) part of the faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), a private educational institution based in San Francisco, along with her husband, Richard Shapiro. More
