Orange County: Tet Festival 2013 (video)

Nguyen, Seven, Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
Orange County's Tet celebration welcomes the Year of the Snake (magnumasi.com)

Big belly Budai (Tanignak.com)
Tet, or Tet Nguyen Dan, is the Buddhist Vietnamese lunar New Year. It is celebrated from Saigon to Westminster.

English translation: "Feast of the First Morning." Celebrated this year in February according to the solar calendar, the upcoming Tet Festival will feature Old World traditions with additions to welcome the arrival of a new era. It is a manifestation of respect for family and ancestors.

Because it falls on Day One of Month One on the Chinese calendar, it is often celebrated in conjunction with Chinese New Year. Tet 2013 is a five-day celebration that begins on Feb. 9 and culminates with a massive festival on Feb. 14th (Valentine's Day). But the actual New Year begins on the 10th.

Tet is an enormous Vietnamese celebration compared to other cultures. It is preceded by weeks of preparation that commonly includes house cleaning and painting.

There is a Vietnamese belief that loud noise wards off bad luck, so fireworks and gongs are rung and set off all night.

There are parades, featuring traditional lion and dragon dances and family feasts. Inviting ancestors who have passed on to join in the celebration is common; special ceremonies and rituals are involved.

Traditional food served on Tet consists of Vietnamese delicacies like sticky rice dumplings called banh chung, roasted watermelon seeds, pickled onions, and a wide variety of dried and sweetened fruit. At the end of Tet Nguyen Dan, elders hand out envelopes full of money to children both to reward good behavior and as a symbol of good luck.

Tet 2013 will celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Snake [like the Mesoamerican naga Quetzalcoatl], following the close of the Year of the Dragon and preceding the Year of the Horse. It is a traditional celebration full of joy remembering and showing respect to loved ones who have gone before.

Music and Tattoo Ink (Musink Festival)

    MusInk.org; Wisdom Quarterly

It's time to do it, get inked up with a massive Siddhartha on one arm, Kwan Yin on the other. The two best known bodhisattvas ought to bring some luck.

What better place than the 6th Annual Musink Fest, a day of old skool punk music (including T.S.O.L.) and needles spouting India ink?

    Protective ink? (Buddhisttattoo.org)
If only some Khmer artists were going to be working their magic, an ancient Sanskrit and/or Khmer script might be better to attract Siri the Goddess of Good Fortune.

Some religions, one in particular, forbid tattooing. While it is not encouraged in civilized society anywhere, it is increasingly tolerated and even applauded. In societies still connected to their shaman roots (including Ice Age Europe as evidenced on the Ice Man's body), it is encouraged and even mandatory some times.

There is little sense in following fads. What will be more embarrassing than changing in a public dressing room to reveal yet another "tr-mp st-mp"?

If we are to dive, let us dive deep and dive well. Do it, if you do it, right. Don't "just" do it, like Nike says. It is easy to mindlessly follow. Look around: Everyone is following.

LYRICS: "I'M TIRED OF LIFE" (T.S.O.L.)
I'm tired of looking (It's not in my vision)
I'm tired of seeing (Don't wanna see this)
I'm tired of hearing (Don't tell me your S)
I'm tired of being (So why am I here?)
I'm tired of life (And all of its jokes)
Imaginary lines (To fool the fools)
Imaginary rules (To live your life by)
    And all the world's fooled

Life is so easy when you're told what to doWhere to work and how to be you
But the jokes wears off and you're still laughing
Caught in your own trap and you're all happy

Too stupid to know it (Just try and use your head)
Too stupid to care (You've all been fooled)
Just one voice screaming (Is there really a point?)
Just one in a million (A little speck of flesh)
Who's gonna hear it (Scream till you die)
Who's gonna know it (Your conscience, your mind)
Who even cares (No one but yourself)
    It's hopeless (You're hopeless)

Because of the process, because of the system,
because you're still laughing, because you don't listen
Because of the process, because of the system,
because you're still laughing, because you don't listen.

    PREFACE TO THE ASSEMBLY
The pure ground without an inch of grass for 10,000 miles still deludes people.
The clear sky without even a speck of cloud deceives us.
Though wedges are driven in and pulled out, this does not impede holding up and supporting space.
A hammer blow on the back of the head.
Let's look at a skillful expedient.

    MAIN CASE
    (Myheartyourheart/flickr.com)
    Attention!
Great Master Tokusan addressed the assembly saying, “Exhaust the end and there's instant attainment.
The mouths of all buddhas of the three times [past, present, future] might as well hang upon the wall.
Now, there's a person who roars with laughter. Ha! Ha!
When you know this one, the essence of your exhaustive study is completed.”

    APPRECIATORY VERSE
    Gathering. Seizing the throat collar.
    Winds burnish. Clouds sweep.
Chilling water, heaven turns to autumn.
Don't say a fish scale lacks taste.

The mission of Buddhist Global Relief (BGR) is to provide relief to the poor and needy throughout the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Bearing in mind the Buddha's statements that "Hunger is the worst kind of illness" and "The gift of food is the gift of life," BGR focuses on providing food aid to those afflicted by hunger and food-insecurity. Its long-range goal, however, is to combat all manifestations of poverty that detract from the inherent dignity of human life.

    Race Relations in America (video)

Watch Race 2012 - Preview on PBS. See more from Race 2012

"OBAMA — Racial barrier falls in decisive victory" was the New York Times headline four years ago after B.S. Obama won the election. But just how much have racial relations changed since 2008? That's one of the questions explored in a documentary on PBS called "RACE 2012."

    Lesbianism vs. $65 million dowry?

Lesbian heiress Gigi Chao is on "loving terms" with father despite $65 million dowry offer
    (fanpop.com)

Gigi has a flood of offers (Bobby Yip/Reuters)
HONG KONG (AP) - The daughter of a flamboyant Hong Kong tycoon -- who has offered $65 million to any man who can woo her away from her lesbian partner -- said she's not upset with her father.

But it's unlikely she will be accepting any of the marriage proposals flooding in.

    I'm not a feminist, but... (inourwordsblog.com)

Tycoon Cecil Chao made world headlines this week when he offered the unusual marriage bounty after learning that his daughter, Gigi Chao, had eloped with her lesbian partner to France.

"I'm actually on very, very loving terms with my father. We speak on a daily basis. He just has a very interesting way of expressing his fatherly love," the 33-year-old told The Associated Press.

CNBC's Robert Frank has all the details on the story about Gigi Chao's father who is offering $65 million to any man able to marry her.

She said her father offered the reward because he was upset after learning she had "a church blessing in Paris" with her girlfriend of the past several years.

"What this whole episode really highlights is that perhaps still, the Chinese -- or in fact the Hong Kong mentality -- can perhaps tolerate the 'don't ask, don't tell' view of sexuality," she said. "But as a social statement, it's still very much a sensitive issue."

Hong Kong decriminalized homosexuality in 1991 without yet legally recognizing same-sex marriage. More + Video

    Comedy fodder
Ashley Wells and Seven, Wisdom Quarterly (COMMENTARY)
This story will never die because it is being immortalized by Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat," "Bruno," "Ali G"). He plans to make his next movie, which may be a comedy for a change, imagining how this dowry offer could turn out.

To give men a fighting chance, professional pickup artists are coming to the rescue: What can ordinary men learn from them? (And what can women learn from the lengths men have to go to to find their ideal dating/predation style?) Effeminate Southern California Public Radio (SCPR.org) personality Larry Mantle gets to the bottom of the matter: The Game: Penetrating the Society of Pickup Artists

Many men might be interested anyway, but when $65 million is hanging in the balance, there are some who would learn Chinese, move to Hong Kong, and hang around the worlds of HK high finance and Parisian fashion... all just to score. Good luck, players, but consider that Gigi might be happy now and ask yourself, Would you make her any happier?

A Shower of Meteors in 2012 (video)

/JungleJoel.com; NASA, NPR (SCPR.org), Wisdom Quarterly
The Perseid meteor shower will be putting on an extraordinary show from Sunday to Tuesday (Aug. 11, 12, and 13). Venus, Jupiter, and Luna (our accompanying moon) will be there, too.

The "shooting star"-studded Perseid meteor shower is expected to wow earthlings on Saturday night with hundreds of ancient, vaporized, dust-specks streaking [through] the atmosphere at more than 100,000 miles per hour. Available to anyone with a clear, dark sky, the only thing keeping you from the show is rampant air and light pollution, and whatever else you may be doing at the time. This event is ideal star-gazing for the lazy. The Perseids, peaking late Saturday Aug. 11/early Sunday Aug. 12, provide the perfect opportunity to take in heavenly bodies sans telescope or fancy equipment. Seeing as much sky as possible is the goal, and laying down to look up is encouraged. The Perseids are a fan favorite among celestial groupies, a popularity Senior Editor of Astronomy magazine, Michael E. Bakich, attributes to the annual spectacle's four unique elements: More

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission is the lead agency running lagoon restoration.

It’s an independent state agency, funded in part by a nonprofit foundation. Members of the commission are appointed from local government and environmental groups.

(LINK) Saving the Santa Monica Bay starts on land in Los Angeles County

The lagoon sits on land managed by the California State Parks system. One interesting thing is that the state parks website seems to show awareness of the fact that there is opposition: it lists the mainstream environmental groups and people that back it.

Commission staffers, the people who work there, are scientists and, in the most neutral sense of the word, bureaucrats. What I mean by that word is that they believe in the process. And over a period of several years, they say, they’ve gone through a lengthy one. Along the way, the public has participated, and regulators and scientists have cast scrutiny on the plans. More
