Sad news on the Buddhist front -- more fake Buddha quotes. But "fake" cuts both ways: The "Nazi Space Buddha" or Iron Man statue we reported on earlier this month turns out to be fake. And strangely some fake Buddha quotes are very good, so good they should have been said by someone, maybe Taoists. But they certainly weren't said by the historical Shakyamuni Buddha. The sincere photographer H. Kopp Delaney is doing a great deal to promote 108 authentic and inauthentic "Buddha quotes" thus littering the Web with many great fakes.

A supposed Buddhist statue allegedly carved from a meteorite 1,000 years ago may not be as ancient as suspected, according to a Buddhism expert who argues that the statue may be a 20th-century fake.

  

The criticisms don't target the material the statue is carved from, which is an iron- and nickel-rich meteorite from the Siberia-Mongolia border.

But outside experts are questioning the statue's origins.

  

Achim Bayer, a Buddhism expert at Dongguk University in South Korea, argues in a new report that the Buddha statue [which is not a statue of the Buddha but of a purported Buddhist "deity" from space -- like Sakka, who is King of Kings (deva-maha-rajas) and Lord of Lords (of the Spaceport of the Thirty-Three or Tavatimsa-deva-rajas), or the Sky-King Vessavana, a maha-raja of one quadrant of the sky/space visible from Earth] has obvious "pseudo-Tibetan features," marking it as a European reproduction likely made between 1910 and 1970.

Tibetans had set up a Vatican-style church-state with a pope-like figure who served as their temporal-spiritual dictator, a post now occupied by the beloved fourteenth man to fill that post, Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama.]

Among these features are European-like shoes that come to the ankles rather than boots; trousers instead of robes; tube-shaped sleeves unlike those seen on traditional Tibetan or Mongolian garb; a full beard, which is not seen on Tibetan and Mongolian deity sculptures; an unusual single earring; and a cape that resembles one worn by Romans rather than ancient Tibetan deities.

In their original paper published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science, Stuttgart University researcher Elmar Bucher and colleagues reported that the Buddha statue first came to Germany after a 1938-1939 Tibet expedition by zoologist and ethnologist Ernst Schäfer, who was sent to the region by the Nazi party to find the origin of Aryan language and culture. The statue then passed into the hands of a private owner. More

LAHORE, Pakistan [formerly Northwest India] - Fifty Gandhara Civilization artifacts from the Lahore Museum collection have received a tremendous response from media and visitors to the New Asia Society Museum in New York in the United States.

Elaine Merguerian, Director of Communications at the New Asia Society Museum, said via email that the exhibition “has received much enthusiastic attention from the media and many, many visitors who are interested in Pakistan, Buddhist heritage, and the story behind the exhibition.”

   

She added that the exhibition was “probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these great works of art from Pakistan in the United States.”

LAHORE MUSEUM Director Humaira Alam said museums in South Korea, Japan, and Sri Lanka had repeatedly asked the Lahore Museum for artifacts. “They are not sent until we are assured about the timely return of the artifacts and their security,” she said.

  

The collection was also displayed in Germany, France, and Switzerland between 2008 and 2010 and as part of an exhibition in Japan in 1999.

Last seen at home?

It was not clear when or if the pieces that have been winning rave reviews in New York were last on display at the Lahore Museum itself, since museum officials made conflicting statements. More

It sounds like a mash-up of Indiana Jones' plots, but German researchers say a heavy Buddha statue brought to Europe by the Nazis was carved from a meteorite that likely fell [to Earth] 10,000 years ago along the Siberia-Mongolia border.

  

This space Buddha, also known as "iron man" to the researchers, is of unknown age, though the best estimates date the statue to sometime between the eighth and 10th centuries.

   

The carving depicts a man, probably a Buddhist deva, perched with his legs tucked in, holding something in his left hand.

  

On his chest is a Buddhist swastika, a[n ancient worldwide spiritual] symbol of luck that was later co-opted by the Nazi party of Germany.

   

"One can speculate whether the swastika symbol on the statue was a potential motivation to displace the 'iron man' meteorite artifact to Germany," the researchers wrote online Sept. 14 in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science.

Inner-circle German "National Socialist" party leaders (referred to by the shorthand Nazis) like Goebbels, Himmler, and the Austrian Vril Society ladies headed by their oracle Maria Orsitch were fascinated by all things occult -- particularly as they related to "Aryans" and beings from space who contacted the party through Vril and other means. Whether these were well meaning entities from Aldebaran, the Nordic goddess (devi) Freyja, the northern quadrant sky/space King Vaisravana, (Vessavana), or sinister titans (asuras), it is hard to say. But Nazis tried to deify their mouthpiece Adolf Hitler (much as Rove was the architect for Bush), a skillful orator kept on drugs that produced delusions of grandeur, in the public eye. They did this by associating him with the myth of Aryan forbears, psychic Madame Blavatsky Buddhist/Theosophical lore, religious symbols (like the iron cross and swastika), vegetarianism, German pagan and Spiritism movement trappings. Modern people, weighed down by their counter-propaganda biases and assumptions, can't be bothered to assimilate the complicated-truth when a compelling-narrative is so much easier to swallow. Why did the Nazis go to Tibet? Why did they send delegations all over the world to inspect extraterrestrial artifacts and bases, particularly in Antarctica? Why did they build saucer-shaped craft and time-traveling bells (Die Glocke)? Why did they try to unite the world under one tyrant?

SWAT, Pakistan (formerly northwestern India) - Militants are holding sway in restive Swat Valley. They are destroying the remnants and heritage of Gandhara Buddhist civilization there.

In the absence of appropriate security arrangements, a historic rock-carved image of the Buddha (near Jahanabad) has already been partially destroyed. However, restoration ("facelift") is underway.

Situated on the banks of the Swat river, known in ancient times as Svastu, the scenic Swat Valley was the center of Buddhist civilization. Prior to being colonized by England as part of the United Kingdom, what are now called "Pakistan" and "Afghanistan" were simply the northwestern frontier of India -- much as it had been at the time of the Buddha.

• The Buddha's extended family -- the Shakya ("gray land" or Afghanistan) Clan was from this region. Kapilavastu, asserts Dr. Ranajit Pal (a maverick historian), was near modern Bamiyan, Afghanistan.

In ancient scripts Swat is known as Udhyana, meaning garden or park. Historians say the Indian Emperor Asoka re-introduced Buddhism to Swat spreading it to Peshawar, Taxila, and beyond into Afghanistan.

Growing militancy has emerged as a major threat to these rare sites throughout the restive valley. Some have already been damaged. The Jehanabad Buddha is one such complete and inspiring symbol of Gandharan art.
 
Preserved by nature due to difficult location, this meditating Buddha carved some 20 feet high has survived many attacks since 1994. However, the last one proved destructive to the Buddha's face.
  
The body of the Jehanabad Buddha had holes filled with explosives, which the militants could return for the final round of completely destroying the unique image.

Complaints were made to the DOC and the Ministry, and they will take some action, said Nasir Khan, an official from the Swat Museum.
 
Unlike the past, the sites look bleak now: No foreign tourists are visiting the sites for fear of getting caught up in growing militant activity. This has badly damaged the economy of the area which largely depended on tourism.
  
Due to growing insecurity and lack of a well thought out preservation strategy, some of the sites are fast losing their attraction for tourists from around the world otherwise interested in following the Buddhist touris circuit in India and Nepal and other Buddhist lands.
