"Told You So"? That would be a distasteful title. Wisdom Quarterly said the world would end, and has it not?

 

Look around and suddenly see that the world is not the same: It's similar but not identical. Never to return, all phenomena is hurtling toward destruction, just as we were warned in the Buddha's final admonition. On that day the Buddha encouraged the devas and ascetics gathered around him before he blissfully reclined into final nirvana:

"Behold now, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

All "conditioned phenomena" are that way. (Conditioned? Composite things, heaps that depend on supporting conditions, constituents, parts). The world is on fire! But to say so, that is not something anyone ordinarily wants to hear.

We desire and want to grasp and cling to what we desire. We are hurt to find that it is ALL going away, ALL swirling down the drain, ALL perishing just as soon as it arises. What all?

All the world we have ever known, ever experienced here on this plane and every other plane as well.

That is not to say everything is doomed. There is a further shore beyond these planes we cycle through. There is peace. There is rest. There is the non-arising, the not-coming-to-be of what is perishable and subject to suffering.

One can know-and-see it in this very life. Know what? The going, the going, the going beyond, the going altogether beyond. Oh, what an awakening! So it would be.

How will we see it, how will we awaken, how will we go from here to there and make an end of all misery?

One night Young Goodman Brown ventured into the forest adjacent to old Salem town. There he saw a vision of evil -- the "good" town folk engaged in a ritual with a devil. The preacher welcomed the circle: "Depending upon one another's hearts, ye had still hoped that virtue were not all a dream. Now ye are undeceived! ...Welcome again, my children, to the communion of your race."

Were it so, the world could not stand. For, according to the Buddha, the world has "four protectors" (Sigalovada Sutra). These are generosity, kind words, compassionate helpfulness, and impartiality. So the world goes on. But "going on" means constantly ending. Everything is perishing. What is here to hold on to? And we haven't even understood this world.
 

"Generous, of sweet speech, Helpful, and impartial to all – By these four fixed, the world goes round As the linchpin serves the moving cart. If these in the world were not found Then this repercussion would redound: Neither mother nor father could expect From children proper honor and respect. But since these four winning ways The wise approve and display, They to eminence have attained With praise and honor rightly gained"

The Penultimate Day: Mayan Calendar (sutra)

Siddhartha meets Mara under the Bodhi tree the night before the dawn of enlightenment.

"Therefore, since the world has still/Much good, but much less good than ill,/And while the sun and moon endure,/Luck's a chance, but trouble's sure,/I'd face it as a wise man would,/And train for ill and not for good./But take it: if the smack is sour/The better for the embittered hour;/It will do good to heart and head..." (A.E. Housman).

 
Well, this just about does it for us in the Old Age. "Any last words, Zaphod?" "No." "Trillian?" "No."

 

"I don't have any either," Arthur Dent exclaimed. 

"We figured that, monkey man."

"You, Ford?" "Well, I find the prospect of death contracts the mind wonderfully."

Fortunately, Trillian's been meditating. So she's saved, and her eventual liberation is guaranteed. Not as much can be said for the rest of us. We did make some merit, good karma, and that's a comfort.

Fear not for fear weakens one. Love.

Near the end, this is the end, what to do as it ends? Shall we glance at the nice town, review its war plan, tour the mass graves? If we know there's nothing to fear but this very fear itself, how shall we dispel the fear? It is a problem as old as ancient India. At that time the Buddha dispelled fear by delivering this sutra.

The Pali commentary to this discourse explains that if someone attaining meditative absorption (jhana) with a white disk (kasina), focusing until whiteness fills the mind, emerges from absorption unexpectedly at night then he or she might mistakenly think it is daytime. But this explanation seems forced. 

Another explanation is that a mistake was made during the [memorization, repeating, and] transmission of this part of this discourse. In other words, perhaps the text originally had something that made better sense.

This theory is supported by the fact that the Chinese version has alternative wording:

“Both day and night, some recluses do not understand the path of the Dharma.” It also has a different description of the third knowledge (Section 31). It contains no mention of the Four Noble Truths or the fourfold formula for the taints (defilements of heart/mind).

The Chinese (EA 31.1) simply has: “When my mind became composed, purified, clarified, without blemish, without defilement, grown soft and workable, fixed, and immovable, I called to mind knowledge to eliminate the taints. Then I truly knew suffering” (T125 p666c15).
 

Given the centrality of the Four Noble Truths and the importance of the Buddha’s enlightenment, it seems unlikely that this would have been dropped during transmission. It is more likely that it was added to the Pali version sometime after the original composition. Some support for this idea is found in MN 6 (Section 19), MN12 (Section 19)... More
 

Penultimate?

"Next to last." That's not today. That's not even tomorrow. We're always living in the last moment, because every moment ends with a falling phase. If we could see that, we would not cling. But we do not see that, so we fear (a kind of hate). Or we desire. Or we become confused. And in our aversion-attraction-delusion, we grasp. Then we cling. And so are born all manner of troubles. Fear not. Love more. Sit in self-development to quicken the personal evolution that is trying to happen. Let the solstice, the New age, the advent of the next cycle help speed up the process.

Mayan Calendar: A Second Coming?

But he promised to one day return, just as he had left, coming over the ocean from the east. It may simply mean the return of the same spiritual message being channeled through another prophet. Don't all calendars end? Does the world end with them? What happens at the end of our Gregorian calendar? The same thing that happens at the end of all calendars: They repeat. Ad nauseum. Samsara has no end point but instead whirls like a wheel. We ourselves must get off this endless merry-go-round rather than expecting it to stop.
  
A Second Coming?

All of the world religions speak of a second coming. Christendom is Waiting for Godot. And Islam awaits the great Imam (Madhi). This belief is rife with connotations that Buddhism is boarding the bandwagon it actually created when the historical Buddha spoke of buddhas who had lived aeons ago and the next person, already living in a space world called Tusita, who would go on to reach the goal and become a world teacher. That, too, however, is not for aeons. There is little chance of Maitreya arising anytime soon. But other great, universal teachers with a unitarian message may indeed use the Mayan Calendar to herald the new Age of Aquarius. And we will all be as one. What will December 22, 2012 be like? It will be as people wish it to be, in accordance with the timeline they choose, which means that for us it will be like the ending of "40 Year Old Virgin":

The real Mayan Calendar, as distinct from the Aztec version it is so often confused with, is much more sophisticated than the 12-page paper book we use. Translation above.

Shift happens. It's about to hit the fan. The ancient Maya were told something as were the various American empires that came before. They created monolithic stone art in the jungle exactly like the Buddhist worlds of Angkor, Cambodia and Borobudur, Indonesia.

How are they connected? Beings from space, akasa devas, gave them technology, ruled them, and influenced their art. The faces and figures they were carving in stone were not their own.

The pyramids they erected echo pyramids all over the planet and nearby planets. In Buddhist lands these were great curvilinear (circle square, globe box) reliquaries (stupas, chortens, or pagodas) set on geometrically precise mandalas. Peaked, jeweled, gleaming white (like the original alabaster coating of the Pyramid of Giza), rounded at the base, and housing great transmuted relic treasures, they serve similar trans-dimensional functions. These remain a mystery only hinted at from time to time (and traveling in time like Buddhist bells as Die Glockes).

Preparing to live starts by meditating on death. For such meditation inspires in us a sense of spiritual urgency.

Time is short if we think it's short. Or the moment (the now) extends to encompass anything, any event, any eventuality.

Sometimes it is wise to make it feel short. The Buddha spoke of an ancient teacher who taught that meditators should reflect on life as being like a piece of meat dropped on a hot skillet, or like a drop of dew on a blade of grass, like a line drawn on water, or some such -- but in those days so long ago, the Buddha emphasizes, the human lifespan was much longer. What to say of our time and our need to make the best use of our time?

"Hi, it's me, Death; are you busy?"

A killer with a drawn sword is standing just behind. Straighten the spine and meditate. Life is short, death is long, meditate. Before long this body will lie by the wayside like a useless log.

If such reflection leads to excessive worry and an unsettled feeling, then it is doing more harm than good. We want enough urgency to begin our cultivation, our development, our refinement or "evolution," but not so much that we are inundated by a sense of overwhelm, futility, or lack of hope.

We have time, BUT what time do we have? We have the same time we always had, just now. We have now. We can begin now, and nothing else matters. If we delay, we throw the only time we have away.

A cosmopolitan man lost deep in the boondocks asked a local simpleton, "Hey, friend, how do I get into town?" "You can do it," the simpleton replied, "I just wouldn't start from here." 

We may not feel our starting point is any place to set out from, but it's all we have. We have to start right where we are. Where else would we start? Wherever we are, the real question is, When will we start? Even then it will be now, so why would we delay and make it harder?

It's almost as if people have forgotten that the world ends this December. The Mayan Calendar's 2012, Gibson's real-life Apocalypto, a Rapture, some Revelation (unveiling), the Second Coming (of Quetzalcoatl)... Then what?

 

"There will be no coffins when you and I die, no consecrated ground, no sin to end all sins and angels with scorched wings -- and if the thought of it stings: Sorry, God, there's no coffins, just bloody jellies," Nick Blinko insists.

"You're trippin," they'll say. The breath goes in; the breath goes out. The baby gets in, water's dirty, pull the plug, Bye-bye, baby. Where was I? Breath goes in; breath goes out.... Why was I born, and where will I go next? Uptown? Downtown? Another town?
  
"No coffins, just bloody jellies. Glance at the nice town. See the war plan it owns. There'll be mass graves. So I want my death grant, 30 pounds, in advance. Buy now. Don't leave to chance. At least it's the final kill. No coffins, just bloody jellies."

 
Neither Buddhist, Hindu, nor Jain sacred texts say the world ends on any magical date like 12-21-12. Nor does shaman lore from anywhere around the world. Maybe only the West ends? The world is ALWAYS ending. Why are we holding our breath for a big kerrang?

  
Oh. Breathe in/breathe out, breathe in/breathe out... Who knows more, the Sayadaw or the Lama? Neither of them say, GAME OVER; no need to buy X-mas gifts this year. "No coffins, just bloody jellies. This their creation, to purify the planet, a new beginning, no it's not destruction!" Ah, Blinky's smart and prescient.

Sitting on top of the world, the Himalaya. All is still, all is quiet. We can concentrate.

Notice that according to the calendar, the "end of the world" is a Friday night? People will party like it's 1999, except it'll be Year 0 - 1 (year zero minus one), final day, zero hour. Midnight will hit. People will hold their breath. And suddenly, with lots of warning, it will be December 22, 2012. The ancestral Maya will say, "It's what we've been trying to tell you! All the hubbub was nothing more than speculative calculations and interpretations by non-Mayans. After all, the Mayan Calendar has ended lots of times." And with that, people will sleep. And things will carry on. So with all that excitement in the offing, it's time to make the most of summer break. Climb a mountain, read a sutra, notice a nimitta. For as many arhats have figured out, "Not having been, they come to be; once having been, they cease." They? Phenomena, things, composite entities (animate and inanimate), even those closest to us -- the constituents of being (becoming). Everything is hurtling towards destruction. Is that not reason enough to strive for real safety, namely, nirvana?
