China's pollution worst in the world

Asia-Pacific, Al Jazeera English (aljazeera.com); Wisdom Quarterly
Beijing smog is visible from outer space (ZMEscience.com); Great Wall grueling race

Residents fear the outdoors (aljazeera.com).
Residents of Beijing have been refusing to step outdoors due to fears sparked by the dangerous levels of pollutants in the air. The air quality in Beijing on Saturday and Sunday was the "worst on record."

This is according to an environmentalist group noting that the pollution levels in the city were at 30-45 times the safety level. The densely populated Chinese capital (Beijing) has been wrapped in thick smog since Friday, reducing visibility and disrupting traffic but the air quality reportedly improved on Sunday.

NPR‘s Louisa Lim reports from Beijing that the smog has affected more than 30 Chinese cities: “China is choking on its own development...new cars...the pollution has been exacerbated by weather patterns, combined with an unusually cold spell. ‘In the winter, we have to burn more coal to get heating,’ says Zhou Rong of Greenpeace (ZMEscience.com).

"This is really the worst on record not only from the official data but also from the monitoring data from the US embassy," Zhou Rong, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace said about the hazardous pollution in the city. "Some areas in (neighboring) Hebei province are even worse than Beijing." The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Centre said that the conditions were likely to last another two days as the heavy pollution is trapped in an area of low pressure. More

Vegans in Space (NASA)

(finedininglovers.com, July 24, 2012); Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
Worlds in space/sky (Sanskrit, akasha) are best visited by vegans (wallpapervortex.com). Below Mars image from Shutterstock engineers at NASA’s Synthetic Biology Initiative using life to create building blocks of life instead of shipping them (via inhabitat.com).

Mars is really more hospitable than trip there
We have Buddhists in space, Buddhists from space, Buddhists sending messages from space, so why not smart, compassionate, green (environmentally-conscious) vegans?

The next time NASA sends astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, they will not be eating synthetic capsules, freeze-dried food, or liquid meals. That's so last millenium.

On their mission to Mars, NASA astronauts will eat 100% vegan meals complete with fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the spaceship.

How is this possible? [A better question is, Why? Could it be that even mainstream scientists know full well that a vegan diet is the healthiest for humans particularly those under the strains and stresses of space travel, while the fiction is maintained that here on Earth we need junk food and flesh?]

It is all thanks to the research being done by NASA's Advanced Food Technology (AFT) project.

V is for Vegan tees (OnOurSleeve.com)
Since Mars has some gravity, the AFT researchers believe astronauts will be able to chop and cook vegetables and even grow their own plants with hydroponics using recycled water.

The six to eight astronauts who will participate in the Mars mission will require enough food for three years. Mars is so far away that NASA will not be able to send food every six months like they do for the International Space Station. Neither will they be able to preserve meat or dairy for such a long period, according to senior research scientist Maya Cooper.

That is why Cooper and her team have come up with a menu of 100 vegan recipes. According to this video, NASA is still working to ensure the astronauts have healthy and varied meals. It is not clear how talented a chef will be onboard to prepare these recipes, but if this animated 3D short film is any indication, the astronauts are in for years of treats. Getting fat for Kill Turkey Day

Tiffany Hsu, Los Angeles Times (Nov. 20, 2012); CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly
Face it, or don't eat it. Or there's kind Tofurky. By eating it one is complicit it its torture and gruesome murder. Americans will buy 581 million pounds of turkey flesh for Thanksgiving this year but will trash more than a third of it (keepitsimplesurvival).

American tradition means eating dinner at lunch set up to look like a big family supper near Plymouth Rock, which means inviting the neighborhood Native American family to sit at one end. In the center is a big dead bird. This is sad enough, but it gets sadder:

A third of all Thanksgiving turkey meat won't be eaten.

SAD: Standard American Diet
Americans will buy 581 million pounds of the fowl, but 204 million pounds will end up in the trash can, the Natural Resources Defense Council reports.

Some 204 million pounds of meat will end up in the garbage after the holiday feast, according to an NRDC blog post.

The waste is especially appalling given that the resources required -- including feed, water and transportation -- to produce each pound of turkey are equivalent to fuel enough to drive a car 11 miles and take a 130-minute shower.

Natives never wasted any part of an animal.
Overall, that equates to greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 800,000 car trips from New York to San Francisco and enough water to supply New York City for more than 100 days.

Over the full year, Americans chuck out $165 billion in uneaten food, according to the NRDC.

And turkey prices are not getting any cheaper. They are up 7% from a year ago, pushed by the severe summer drought... More

Why are 15 million Americans breathing fire?

Lisa Garr (Hay House), The Aware Show; Amber Dorrian, Yogi Seven, Wisdom Quarterly

Heart burning and fire breathing are all too common among Americans (jeffreydach.com)

Fire breath (asylum.com/HuffPo Weird News)
Ever get that burning sensation in the chest? Ever feel ready to breathe fire? Why do 15 million Americans suffer from acid reflux every single day?

Millions of dollars are spent on antacids everyday. How much is too much before we look for a solution rather than just masking the problem?

The Aware Show Teleseminar had a visit from the creator of The Body Ecology Diet, Donna Gates.

Her information about growing a healthy gut lining with probiotics is some of the most cutting-edge information on the health forefront available today. Why? Mostly because it works!

Gates teaches health conscious individuals how to grow our own probiotics to build super-strains of healthy bacteria in the tummy so we will never need antacids again.

Want to learn the secrets of reversing the effects of aging, getting more energy, and building beauty from the inside out? Listen to this show and learn how sugar makes us age faster and causes candida to grow in the body.

Probiotics, such as those found in coconut water kefir, help us reduce cravings for sugar. They balance our blood-sugar levels. It's lovely and delicious with a tangy lactic acid taste that, paradoxically, means less acidity and better breath.

Videos in this special offer contain cooking segments on how to make probiotic-rich foods and drink and offer many other healthy recipes to love. More

Lady Gaga barfs on stage (video) + Sutra

Amber Dorrian, Bela, Seven, Wisdom Quarterly; video courtesy of

(thehollywoodgossip.com)
BARCELONA - Demonstrating the influence of little Justin Bieber to set trends, previously fashion-forward lipsyncher Lady Gaga vomited live on stage in Spain while performing "The Edge of Glory."

She was on the edge of finishing up her 24 song set when, sometime during Song 23, a visceral constriction created a spontaneous rhythmic ejection of the contents of her stomach with what seems to be a pink (perhaps bloody) phlegm-like substance. Then it happened again and yet again. How long before Ashley Simpson jumps on the bandwagon?

I won't be outdone by that kid!
During his Believe Tour, The Beebs blamed it on junk food consumed with radio personalities before the show. Goodness knows what Lady Gag' will come up with. But she is being good humored about it. And the most amazing thing is, she kept dancing! Does that mean she's lip-syncing through her entire tour? Or is she trying to lose those extra 25 pounds she padded on eating junk food the old-fashioned way? Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a serious syndrome, much worse than BDSM cravings!

The professional dancer along side her was unfazed in his performance proving what many of the greats say: "The show must go on!" At least that was the underlying message in "Moulin Rouge" when Nicole Kidman did all that Indian dancing for Baz Luhrmann.

The translation on one of the videos reads, "During her concert in Barcelona on October 6, the new queen of pop, it seems, felt unwell and vomited on stage!" Gags simply tweeted, "SPAIN, you took the piss outta me. Thats some hard bodied pop stuff. I'll never forget tonight Barcelona. FOREVER."

The Real Thing
Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly translation; C.B. Varma (Baveru Jataka, Jt. 313, 339)
Buddha, Mandalay (gorbulas_sandybanks/flickr.com)
Once upon a time the merchants of Varanasi traveled to Baveru Island. They carried a crow with them. At that time there were no birds anywhere on the island. So most people had never seen one. When the crow was put on display, the people thronged to look with great curiosity.

Some remarked, “Look at its glossy color!” Others said, “Look at its silky fur! Still others marvelled, “Look at its pretty beak and jeweled eyes!” In this way many people praised the crow.

They approached the merchants and pleaded, “Sirs, you have others like this in your land. Sell us this one, and you find another.” They offered one piece of money for the bird. The merchants agreed to sell but demanded a higher price. Finally, they made a deal -- 100 pieces for the crow.

The islanders gleefully carried their new pet in a pompous procession throughout the island then placed it in a golden cage. The crow was treated to a variety of foods and desserts and lived happily in spite of being known for ten evil characteristics, enjoying all sorts of gain and praise.

A New Arrival
Merchants arrive with new bird (jathakakatha.org)
When the merchants next visited Baveru, they brought along a peacock. The peacock was trained to sing at a finger snap and dance at the clapping of hands. When it was put on display, it greatly amused the islanders with its singing and dancing.

The new peacock proved far more alluring than the old crow. Charmed, the people went to the merchants and eagerly expressed a desire to purchase it. They reasoned with the merchants: “Sirs, you have birds like this in your land. Sell us this one, and you find another in your land”

Royal peacock (geraldguild.com)
The merchants, wanting a better bargain, replied: “Sirs! We first brought a crow, and you took it from us. Now we bring a peacock, and you want to take that, too? Next time we will not bring any bird here.” The people insisted offering a higher and higher price. Finally, a deal was agreed on of 1,000 pieces of money.

The people placed the peacock in a cage made of seven jewels. They then treated it to all sorts of food, honey, fried snacks, and so on. The crow hardly got any attention at all. Nobody offered it anything.

One day seizing the opportunity it flew out of its cage with a shrill “Caw, caw!” and settled on a dunghill.

Before the crested peacock appeared
The crow enjoyed gain and was revered
Since to Baveru the honey-voiced peacock came
The crow was shorn of all its praise and fame.

So people to diverse priests due honor paid,
Till the Buddha the full light of truth displayed:
For when the sweet-sounding Buddha preached the law,
From heretics their gifts and praise people withdraw.

The Buddha concluded the Rebirth Tale (Jataka) with these stanzas and by pointing out that in the past the crow had been the Nigantha Nataputta (Mahavira, the founder of Jainism) and the Bodhisatta himself had been the peacock.

How much happiness makes up for sadness?

Eric Barker (BusinessInsider.com, Oct. 7, 2012); Wisdom Quarterly
Are Buddhist monastics the happiest of all? (Tricycle.com/Youaretrulyloved.com)

Smile! It's healthy (baconbabble.com).
Psychologist Barbara Frederickson is an expert on flourishing and has been an advocate of finding ways to bring more positive emotions into our lives.

In her research she discovered a critical 3 to 1 ratio, indicating that we need to have three positive emotions for every negative one in order to thrive.

And Frederickson has found out that if we really want to prosper, we shouldn’t try to eliminate negative emotions. Rather, we should work on keeping the ratio at three positive for every one negative.

Happiness is natural (dreamingdog.multiply.com)
Most of us, she has found, have two positive experiences for every negative. This gets us by, but it is effectively languishing.

How many people are at 3 to 1? Around 20%.

Frederickson and Losada pinpointed such “flourishing” mental health in 45 people from a survey of 188 university students.

Forty-five out of 188 (23%) may seem very few, but several surveys have shown that only about 20% of Americans are flourishing in this sense.

Sound familiar?
Is that our spidey-sense tingling? It should be for regular readers: We’ve seen similar patterns with ratios and happiness before. While 3 to 1 keeps you happy, 5 to 1 keeps relationships smooth.
Sensuality is NOT the way to actual happiness.
It turned out that the 15 high-performance teams averaged 5.6 positive interactions for every negative one. The 19 low-performance teams racked up a positive/negative ratio of just 0.363. That is, they had about three negative interactions for every positive one…

What’s even scarier is that Losada’s 5:1 ratio also appears to be essential when you get home and try to muster the energy for a successful marriage... More

Heaven or Enlightenment?
Buddhist lore, Seven Dharmachari, Wisdom Quarterly
Meditation superhero (msnbc.msn.com)
There were once two Buddhist monks meditating, having vowed to reach enlightenment. They became stream enterers, the first stage along the path to awakening and the final end of all suffering -- arhatship. One joyfully proceeded, but the other stopped. The first asked, "Why have you stopped, friend?"

The second answered, "I have suffered greatly over many lives. And I wish, so as a way of making up for all that suffering, to first be reborn in heavenly realms. Then and only then will I seek to accomplish the goal."

The first shrank back, "Friend, do not speak in such way! The Blessed One, the noble ones, they never spoke in such a way."

"My mind is made up," the second stubbornly declared.

The first continued to meditate, and in no long time he reached the goal for which youths of good family leave home for the homeless life of a spiritual seeker. He did what was to be done, abandoning rebirth and suffering once and for all.

The second carried on for years and eventually died in old age. He was immediately reborn in India as the illegitimate child of a woman who, to conceal her infidelity had been concealing her pregnancy. When she gave birth, she immediately went out onto a dirt road along a path frequented by herds of cattle.

Predisposed (alibaba.com)
And just as a large herd was coming headed by a chief bull, she tossed the newborn onto the road. The powerful bull, mysteriously moved by the child's merit, stopped over him protecting him from harm as the cows went around.

The second monk had been reborn fully conscious, aware of his grave and dangerous mistake in the previous life, having chosen vain happiness as some sort of compensation for previous suffering -- both of which have their basis in illusion and misunderstanding.

He lamented not heeding the first monk's advice. And by a supernormal feat of concentration, he tossed the dirt that was caked to his body from contact of dust and afterbirth, crossed his legs, and levitated midair thanking the bull.

He developed the absorptions, emerged purified in heart/mind, and took up the insight practice of reviewing the 12 links of Dependent Origination. He penetrated the ultimate Truth and was thereby liberated from all suffering; he became one of the noble ones (fully enlightened individuals, arhats).

McDonald's goes vegetarian for India (video)

Tiffany Hsu (LATimes.com, Sept. 4, 2012) UPDATED
() The evil Ronald McDimmu HamBorgir does something good for a change. (Norwegian black metal by Dimmu Borgir).

McDonald’s, that carnivore’s haven of beefy Big Macs and chicken McNuggets, is going vegetarian.

The fast food giant will open its first non-meat restaurant next year in India, in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar. The branch, to be located by the much-visited Golden Temple, will serve herbivore options tailored to the country’s cultural tastes, according to AFP.

Much of the Indian population avoids certain types of meat. Hindus consider cows sacred and don’t eat beef, while Muslims avoid pork. Indian McDonald’s restaurants already feature much less meat than the chain’s locations in other countries.

The company’s bestseller in India is the McAloo Tikki burger, which features a fried potato patty and is responsible for a quarter of sales. The chain has fewer than 300 branches in India -- a growing market for fast food that has already attracted competitors such as Subway, KFC and more.

Research in recent years suggest that Indians spend a quarter of their income on food, compared to the 1.5% they shell out for health issues.

Next up: Another vegetarian McDonald’s planned for Katra, a town near the Hindu pilgrimage site of Vaishno Devi.

The company has long customized menus to its host country. There are kosher McDonald’s in Israel and Buenos Aires, McBaguettes in France, McArabia pita-style sandwiches in the Middle East and more. More

Monks sickly on diets without work or yoga

CC Liu, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
Theravada monks with alms bowls in hand (Damir Sagolj/Reuters)

Eating a decadent diet -- white rice, meats, burned and carcinogenic vegetable oils, sugar, synthetic flavorants and excitotoxins -- has long term consequences. Exercise keeps the aging (oxidizing) effects at bay for lay people, who color their hair, get false teeth, and endure various and sundry skin treatments. Monastics do not have it so easy. Their sedentary lifestyle, often missing the heart of a monastic's duty of meditating on a regular basis, is full of toxins, calories, and excess, the essence of craving. In ancient times there would also have been ample work duties and what we recognize as yoga postures (asanas) to keep the body limber and unconstipated. Now doctors are documenting the predictable results:

A research study indicates that almost half of Thai monks are overweight or affected by noncommunicable diseases
Thai monks (Markus Gebauer/flickr.com)
The study focused on the health concerns of Thai monks and how to offer them food during the upcoming Buddhist Lent [Vassa, the Rains Retreat when monastics refrain from travel].

The survey’s participants included 246 monks from the Dhammayuttika Nikaya [an ascetic strain of forest monks that comprises only 10 percent, as contrasted with most Thai monks who are members of the Maha Nikaya school] and Mahayana movements in 11 provinces. [Since there is next to no Mahayana presence in this overwhelmingly Theravada country, it is likely that the study authors or reporters are mistaking Maha Nikaya and Mahayana.]

Forty-five percent of the monks experience varying levels of obesity, while 40 percent of them face such diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and allergies, partly due to the rich, oily, and sugar laden foods offered to them by the Buddhist faithful.

The average monk’s only sporting activities is walking in the morning while on rounds seeking alms and sweeping temple courtyards. Only around 21 percent have annual health checkups.

According to the study, some monks have more than three evening drinks each day, for they must abstain from eating food. However, some of the drinks offered to monks are not healthy, as they are mostly soft drinks with sugar, leading to diabetes.

A dualtrack campaign is being prepared to teach monks to select healthy drinks and also to inform food donors about healthy food when offering alms to monks.

Coca-Cola and Karma (cartoon)

Why do soft drinks use bubbly soda? It is the only way to make that much sugar palatable. Sugar ends up being more toxic and addictive than the little cocaine once used.

Former exec regrets Coke's marketing campaign
Text: Nola.com/Newsflash, The Washington Post News Service, with Bloomberg News
WASHINGTON - Todd Putman stepped up to a podium Thursday ready to break with his past.

Spread before him was a ballroom full of public health officials and community activists, gathered for a "National Soda Summit" on how to loosen the soda industry's grip on the American appetite.

The conference marked the latest salvo in a barrage of recent attacks on makers of unhealthy food and beverages, especially soda.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, I, announced plans to ban super-size sodas from his city's restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, and bodegas. Disney will no longer run junk-food ads with its children's programming. First lady Michelle's book about the White House vegetable garden, released Tuesday, notes that the only drinks offered during family meals at home are milk and water.

The logic behind these moves has been repeated so often it is practically a mantra: The nation is in the throes of an obesity crisis, and sodas account for an outsize share of the sugar pouring into American bellies.

Putman, 51, shares that view. But he is also driven by another motive: From 1997 to mid-2000, he was a top marketing executive at Coca-Cola.

"It took me 10 years to figure out that I have a large karmic debt to pay for the number of Cokes I sold across this country," he said. On Thursday, he came to settle it.

He wanted to give an inside account of what he contends has been a drive by Coca-Cola to replace not just its direct competitors but all beverages in the American diet -- a campaign for what the company called "share of stomach." He wanted to warn about the industry's focus on young people and minorities.
But mostly he wanted to level the playing field.

"I'm not against soft drinks per se," he began carefully. "What I am for is balance of power. And I think the power has shifted in the wrong direction. The resources, the scale, the intelligence, the strategy these companies use is intense.

"We need to take all that thinking...all that strategy and convert it -- jujitsu it -- to healthy products."

Such a mission would have been inconceivable to the man who joined Coca-Cola back in 1997, Putman said during an interview before the speech. More
