NAVA1 Sutta

Boat
How to choose a good teacher and scholar1. People have to respect a person from whom he learned the Dhamma, like saluting the gods Indra. Educated person who respected it, because it pleased the pupils, will make the Dhamma clear. (316)2. After notice and consider it, the wise man even practicing the Dhamma, and thus become educated, intelligent and skilled. And because the alert, he was hanging out with teachers like that. (317)3. People who follow the stupid and humble teacher, who has not realized the meaning of the Dhamma, and the envious, will be close to death without understanding the Dhamma and not free from doubt. (318)4. Like a man who fell into the river water levels and swift flowing currents would quickly be dragged by that, how people like this can help others to cross? (319)5. Moreover, people who do not understand the Dhamma, who has not noticed its meaning as explained by a knowledgeable, because he himself does not have knowledge - how he can make others understand? (320)6. Like a man who boarded a boat that is equipped with sturdy oars and rudder, which has knowledge about how to drive it, a skilled and wise, with the boat that he can bring more people to cross rivers. (321)7. Moreover, people who already have knowledge and have well-trained mind, the educated and do not waver. Clearly he knows that he can help others to understand, that their full attention to listen and ready to understand. (322)8. Therefore, clearly one should associate with good people, a wise and educated. He must know the meaning of the Dhamma and practice accordingly. And as gain an understanding of the Dhamma, he will achieve happiness. (323)
