"Harry Potter" series revamped $1.6 billion in disc sales

LOS ANGELES - "Harry Potter" is cinematic gold bullion.

The final film within the mega-grossing series, "Harry Potter and therefore the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," shattered box workplace records last weekend when debuting to north of $478 million worldwide.

But that is simply a style of the spoils to return if the bespectacled wizard's performance on DVD and Blu-ray is any indication.

Thus far, the primary seven films in Warner Bros. boy-wizard franchise have banked some $1.63 billion in domestic disc sales, in step with new estimates from the media analysis firm IHS Screen Digest.

That heady variety does not even count the extra $150 million that "Harry Potter and therefore the Deathly Hallows, half 1" remains expected to come up with on home video in North America. Also, importantly, it does not take under consideration the many innumerable bucks additional the series has grossed in foreign home entertainment rentals and sales.

All told, the primary six films within the series shipped an estimated eighty nine million video units in their initial releases to the U.S. video market throughout the past eight years, IHS reports.

Theatrically, "Potter" has lapped "James Bond" because the most lucrative franchise in movie history, having already grossed over $6.8 billion worldwide through Tuesday.
