The king thought, "I do not find fault in this man, but how can I tell if he is a friend or my enemy?" Then he thought, "No one can decide the answer to this question if not the Tathagata, I'll go and ask him."
Then after lunch, secrets went to visit the Master and said, "Bhante how one can distinguish another person, whether he is friend or enemy?" Then the teacher replied, "Those wise in the past, Oh king, have been thinking about this problem, and has mennayakan to people wise about this problem, by following his advice, they have found the Dhamma (the truth), and after leaving the enemy -enemies, they give attention to one's friends. " In this case, at the request of the king, the teacher tells a story of the past.
At one point, when Bhramadatta became king in Benares, the Bodhisattva is a palace servant who gives advice to the king about ha;-religious and worldly matters. At that time, the servants of others slandering an honest servant of the palace. King does not find fault in themselves waiter, asked the Supreme Being, "How can one know a friend or enemy?". By repeating the verse (gathas) first:

Then the Supreme Being was repeated five paragraph below to explain the signs of people could be called as the enemy:
"He did not smile when you see him, no speech that he will show you, He will not turn in doing so, and you answered.
He respects your enemies, he did not pay attention to your friends, He will live with those who praise your glory, but instead he'll praise those who are slandering you.
He will not tell rahasiannya to you, but it opens your secret, He never said good about what you do, your policy will not be praised.
He does not rejoice at the welfare of you, but rejoice over your misfortunes. If he receives something special, he does not remember you, He does not feel sorry for you, and millions do not exclaim, "I hope my friends get something similar.
This is the sign of sixteen where you can know someone that is an enemy. So if it was wise to see and hear, he can know who its enemies. "
"How people bijakasna, who was always careful, have to try hard, so it will develop a sincere, what works (seen Leh eyes and heard by the ear) made by the person, causing that person called as a friend?"

He tells rahasiannya to you, your secret is never opened, he always says well over what you do, he like it if you like to be praised wisdom.
He was glad to hear you state prosperous, but saddened by the news of your misfortune, if he receives something special, he immediately thought of you, he feels sorry for you, and also shouted "I hope my friends have something in common!
This is the sign of sixteen friends who have been clearly stated, which is when a wise man sees and hears, he can know who the real friend. "
